Statement by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Anti-apartheid leader, South Africa

The Government of India should urgently revisit its decision to hang Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan, who have languished on death row for 20 years for their involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi

It is believed that the three will be hanged within the next 7 days.

The death penalty legitimises killing and diminishes the humanity of societies that continue to practice it. It is cruel and inhuman, and should be scrapped.

God made human beings for inter-dependency and love. What distinguishes us from other species is our intrinsic compassion, our ability to reconcile and forgive. We were not made for vengeance or to kill one another.

Statement by Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Anti-apartheid leader, South Africa
